Fringe s3e19 “Lysergic Acid Diethylamide”

Lance Reddick looked like he had a great time filming that episode. RIP

I’ve been meaning to check out Fringe for over a decade now.

The pilot was jaw dropping… in more than one definition of the words

Possibly my least favorite thing about Wrath of Khan is how heavy handed they are with the Moby Dick references.

They’re looking around this incongruous crashed ship, the camera pans past a copy of Moby Dick just as Chekov reads the buckle of the seat belt he’s leaning on. And then Khan spends the rest of the movie unironically quoting Captain Ahab. An allegedly intelligent character compares himself to “guy who sinks his ship, kills his crew and himself over his obsession” and doesn’t see a problem with this.

I’m laughing at the ‘superior intellect.’

Reminds me of Her Story, the detect-em-up game from 2015 where you have to go through clips of several interviews of a murder suspect via keywords. More than once they call out their inspirations in classic literature by name and even have her sing a relevant folk song in its entirety. Apparently this woman whipped out an acoustic guitar and sang an entire folk song during a police interview about the murder of her husband.

If you’re working on a story, don’t do that. Allusion is one thing, grabbing the audience by the throat and shouting “BY THE WAY, THIS STORY IS LIKE KING LEAR. YOU KNOW, SHAKESPEARE’S KING LEAR? THE PLAY? THIS PART OF MY STORY IS LIKE KING LEAR. MAKE SURE YOU’VE READ IT.” is quite another.
