You can get a Nokia flip phone on Amazon for under $100. Before all the tariff BS it was more like $60. My daughter has been using one exclusively for about six months.

You can refer to my comment to a different reply for more details, but this has nothing to do with “keeping up with the Joneses”, it has everything to do with keeping away mice, rate, cockroaches, and the like away from my vehicle and home.
You’re making a whole lot of assumptions about me here, which I’ll ignore.
Here are some reasons why I think this is a bad idea for many people. My good friend and neighbor just has rodents (mice in this case) do $7000 in damage to his car by chewing holes in his wiring harness. Also depending on your climate, said leaves are wonderful homes for cockroaches to breed, which I assume you don’t want unless you are insane. This was a major issue in Florida if I didn’t immediately rake of the vast bed of oak leaves. I have no problem with “good” rodents. Rabbits, squirrels, chipmonks, headehogs (are these even in the US? I’ve never see one of these anywhere I’ve live), etc. It’s is the mice and rats that can and will ruin your stuff and can majorly screw up your life. Good luck with your leaves.
Sure, if by “wild life” you mean insects and rodents that you probably don’t want in your yard. Also, your grass will be dead if you have a good amount of trees.

This thread is illuminating and makes my GOS use feel very pedestrian. I just use a single profile, I keep everything off my default and only enable what I need when I need it (GPS for instance which is rare) and then disable again, and I have no accounts logged in to anything on my phone.
It’ll never be a BBS to me without door games and screechy modem connecting sounds.

I went in to the article thinking that Nadella had actually come to his senses and realized their AI tunnel vision was going to destroy the company, but nope, he thinks AI is so good that it will destroy MS.
I figured that the point of using a dumb phone would be that there hopefully wouldn’t be meaningful accounts, information, and communication to really get at. Regular calls and SMS were already fair game, and there is basically nothing else on there. Nothing for evil megacorps to siphon up, no social media, not much of anything.

I’ve made the reverse joke when someone said their canoe capsized, I replied “You sure? Even my head isn’t that big!”

I feel like this too. I do not feel comfortable using docker containers that I didn’t make myself. And for many people, that defeats the purpose.

Why would I want add overheard and complexity to my system when I don’t need to? I can totally see legitimate use cases for docker, and work for purposes I use VMs constantly. I just don’t see a benefit to doing so at home.

I do as well. No one ever knows what I am referencing :(

Fixed, my most sincere apology.

Not if the T. rex (see, I did it right!) countered in time with a hadouken,
I’d take that page with a grain of salt, especially since it is quite old and not all of it valid anymore, but I agree that generally you hear the good things about Matrix. Even disregarding what that site has to say, I’d give XMPP a look. XMPP likely isn’t all rainbows either, but I like the traction it is getting and it did a lot of things right in my mind.
I’m not the person you replied to, but a lot of my friends that pushed us to initially use Matrix have grown unhappy with the direction it’s gone and really dislike the clients. I personally host a private Matrix server and I am fine with it for now, but I’m able to avoid most of the drama and bugs by simply not moving to the latest and greatest. I always liked XMPP in the past, but I haven’t used it in a few years. I am glad to see it picking up support and hope that some of the things I didn’t like about it (which I can’t seem to recall at the moment :) ) are no longer problems or at least may get some traction on resolving.

haha that really brings me back.

The fact that you say using NFS makes you old makes me feel like fucking Yoda
I imagine it gunks up the lock mechanism. I have had to eventually replace locks I used it in.
Something something, “it’s the moops!”
