This exceptional case, where the family and estate of the late Val Kilmer are supportive of a generative AI constructed performance, seems likely to become a precedent.

I’m not interested in the movie, but it sounds like everyone involved is okay with it, and Val wanted to be in the movie.

That said, I hope the movie flops.

Did you read the article at all? His estate and kids are all supportive of it, they want it made because of the important message of the movie (it’s based around some real life story). It sucks that they’re using AI but it’s what everyone seemed to want in this case. The man died from cancer, that’s the only reason he isn’t in the movie. He had already been cast but physically couldn’t handle being on set.

Val Kilmer wanted this as well. He had already had his voice recreated in AI for a previous movie so that he could continue to communicate with the audience in a way that felt more authentic to him (his “real” voice, not his voice while he was battling throat cancer).

“His family kept saying how important they thought the movie was and that Val really wanted to be a part of this,” says Coerte Voorhees. “He really thought it was important story that he wanted his name on.

“As human beings, the ability to communicate is the core of our existence and the side effects from throat cancer have made it difficult for others to understand me,” he added. “The chance to narrate my story, in a voice that feels authentic and familiar, is an incredibly special gift.”

Also, the director said that recasting would have been his preference but wouldn’t be feasible for them as they don’t have the budget to refilm the scenes with all the other actors.

Ya’ll are bordering on disrespecting the wishes of a dead man.
