Whoa, Lemmy is going places! I never expected to see a Reddit-style AMA to appear here. I don’t have any questions for you, Mr. Karim but I do wish you the best!

Is this the thread for questions?

What actor from Trek’s past, that primarily wore lots of makeup and prosthetics, do you look up at as a acting role model?

I just want to tell you how much I liked the episode that explored Klingon honor and how that hunting scene kept being recontextualized.

The show reminds me of Lower Decks in that it’s different but it’s the same. Cant wait to see more.

Over a million upvotes on this post!

      Incredible engagement all.

Certainly an instance record but is that a Lemmy record? Are many of those upvotes coming via other APIs or is it just Lemmy’s

I have no idea where you’re seeing a million, I’m seeing 1,300. But that’s still very high for the fediverse! And it’s definitely the highest we’ve ever had in one of our local communities.

LOL — saw k, thought thousand, wrote million

What I get for posting after an IM, screen heavy workday.

Yes, a thousand is huge, even if an order of magnitude lower. 🖖🏼

Wildly unexpected. Thank you for doing this! 💜

I’m a huge Star Trek as well as lover of Birds. imagine my surprise to see a Klingon carrying binos and then saying, “I watch birds.” My family started laughing because I wear a t-shirt often that simply says, “I like birds” and they were really really hoping that you would say that. Haha. Close enough!

I have a very serious two part question:

    1. What is Jay-Den’s favorite bird? And…
    2. What is Karim’s favorite bird?

Hello Karim! How does it feel to be the first (or at least one of the first) celebrities to do an AMA on Lemmy?

What’s the Klingon food like on-set, for scenes where you have to actually eat it? Do they try and make it taste good, or is it as gross as it looks?

Hey Karim, super cool to have you here. I love what you’ve done with your character so far and I’m hoping for continued success on SFA.

    1. What’s the energy like on set? Are there any particularly strong jokesters? Tim Russ on Voyager was noted for cracking a lot of jokes, for example, and I think Michael Dorn and Brent Spiner had a similar reputation on the set of TNG.
    2. Are you into science fiction generally? If so, what’s your favorite book, movie, or tv series?
    3. What do you wish people knew about SFA (or you!) that they don’t seem to?

energy on set is VERY playful. like a real school. jokes, pranks, a lot of fun. Honestly, every single cadet has a funny sense of humor, its like ping pong with the laughs. Kerrice is DEFINITELY the most responsible for making everyone crack up tho

i LOVE sci fi. I think predator badlands that just came out was one of the my favorite movies from the previous year. underrated in my opinion??

Hi Karim, no question I just wanted to say that your performance in episode 4 honestly made it some of the best Star Trek I’ve ever seen.

First of all I agree, but also on that note- we have actually been in touch with the writer for that episode (Eric Anthony Glover) about a possible AMA in the future as well. But first we want to see how this one goes!

Hi Karim! It’s so cool that you’re doing an AMA on the Fediverse!

Anyway, Jay-den is one of my favorite characters of the post-2017 era of Trek. Jay-den is clearly not like most Klingons, but he still feels like a true Klingon. How did you prepare for the role in taking such a unique character who doesn’t fit the “stereotype” (for lack of a better word) of a Klingon while still making him feel like a “real” Klingon to the audience?

What is your favorite dinosaur? 🦕

Apologies if this is a little intimate, but what do you do to prep yourself mentally for filming? Do you have a little routine you do every day, or do you just jump into makeup and start working?

i wish i had an elegant answer for this but i honestly just hop into it. most of my preparation happens far before i even get to set. i spend hours memorizing lines, practicing my deep voice, reading scripts, etc. As soon as i get to set all of the work has already been done.

thank you! i appreciate the insight. i am a community theatre guy, so my routine is basically i brush my teeth and sing a song from a mass i did in high school that really stretches my pipes and gets me in the right headspace. yeah i follow all the hard work happens way before you are there on set (your work definitely shows).

Welcome to a deeply weird community!

If you were going to spend a day as a member of a Star Trek crew (other than your current show), which would you choose, and why? Assume it’s going to be a normal and pleasant day, not one of the exceptionally horrifying days where everyone gets space parasites or some such.
