Ask Science@lemmy.world•Why is glass still the norm for amateur telescopes?English
11·8 months agoThey are used for cheap mirrors such as some parabolic makeup mirrors, cheap reflectors for looking around corners, etc. Polycarbonate and acrylic mirrors are available, but offer much worse optical properties. They cant be as easily polished so you will have to cast them into a mould. Their low stiffness means they are easily distorted. Thermal expansion significantly affects focusing and distortion of optical systems.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•29 Undocumented commands found in ESP-32 microcontrollers CVE-2025-27840English
16·11 months agoNot a backdoor, just undocumented commands on the hci. You would already need access to the device from the microcontroller side to leverage them. Also it’s not uncommon for older devices like this to have undocumented commands
Make sure not to bag and toss all the leaves in the fall - leave a bunch in a pile in the corner of your yard. Thats where they like to stay at night

w_s = 2 * pi * f_s -
since you need to sample at 2x or more the highest desired frequency to get proper reproduction, it should be
w>(1/2)w_s
w > (1/2) w_s w > (1/2) 2 pi f_s w > pi f_s-
But not by much longer. People on the other side of the world or connected to satellites monitoring sunspots would notice pretty much immediately after the light ceases to reach the earth and would tell everyone else over the internet

Experienced Devs@programming.dev•How important is it to have a mentor?English
7·1 year agoDepends on what kind of mentor. A lot of times, having someone who knows tips and tricks or has seen the problem before can be really helpful. Even just watching how someone else does it can be helpful.
For example, at work we have tests written in C in the 90s to 2000s to control equipment and test our products. The way some of the new test engineers and interns would fix things would be to change a parameter and recompile the test, instead of adding a variable to the watch window, using breakpoints, stepping through functions, etc. Showing them that those tools existed was huge for troubleshooting problems whenever something breaks (which is often).
The bad kind of mentor is one who doesn’t/cant explain why doing it one way may have tradeoffs as opposed to the way you would do it. Their job is to 1) set an example for good practices and 2) guide you when you are doing something in a less efficient or self sabotaging way.
