Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's your favorite memory from the early internet?
3·3 years agoThe owner of a site called zug dot com wrote a lengthy and hilarious essay on his treatment for an anal fissure. There were MS Paint illustrations of the procedure.
I was enthralled but also learned a lot about using humor to discuss situations that a person would otherwise be ashamed of.

2·3 years agoMathematics for Machine Learning by Marc Deisenroth and Deep Learning by Ian Goodfellow. Two great books for theory but practice always helps too.
Nice try to trawl for answers to security questions! I’ll never reveal that my earliest memory is playing with my first dog Chestnut in my childhood home on Oak St with my mother whose last name prior to marriage was Jessop!

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are you earliest me memories of web forums like?English
4·3 years agoMy family had a Mac when I was little. One afternoon I ended up in a Windows tech support forum not understanding that it was connected to other people. I typed “Microsoft sucks” and managed to post it as a thread. Someone called me a troll.
My interactions with the internet haven’t changed much since then.

Dungeons and Dragons@lemmy.world•After holding out for almost 10 years, I finally got 5e books.
1·3 years agoMy personal journey went 3.5 -> Pathfinder -> 5e. I would be happy as a pig in poop to play any one of the three at this second. For me, the table’s more important than the game.

0·3 years agoIt’s always cool to see ML going back to the well of biological inspiration. I don’t think there’s any reason that machine have to think or learn the same way we do, but nature has had some good ideas.

Dungeons and Dragons@lemmy.world•My Table: Old School, Young Crowd
1·3 years agoThe “know your hit roll” rule is brilliant and clearly comes from years of experience. Enforce it once or twice and the party will peer pressure each other into knowing their sheets.
I think milestones rather than XP should be the standard for everyone. It’s so much better for level ups to be narratively meaningful.
Can I ask, what the use of having players “bleed out” rather than just making death saves?

Dungeons and Dragons@lemmy.world•Creating Discussion: Favorite DnD Class?
1·3 years agoI’ve always loved Rangers. Mechanically they have good skills, some spells, and they can be built into great range or melee fighters depending on how the story goes. Stylistically, a woodsy loner is just fun to play. It was great to see 5e altered some of their awful class features to make them playable again.
I always end up going back to Sweet Baby Ray’s. Every once in awhile I’ll try something fancier but I always end up going back.
