Not OP, but I have similar feelings and they have nothing to do with the client or plugins. If I can’t easily and securely share my Jellyfin with the Internet beyond my LAN without resorting to a VPN, then Jellyfish is not going to come close to replacing Plex. Sharing my library securely with tech illiterate family and any browser I have access to, without modification, was the one and only reason I moved away from XBMC/Kodi and installed Plex in the first place. Jellyfin is fine inside my LAN and for my personal use, totally fails at hosting.

Interesting take about TNG “standing on its own”. Sure that’s valid. But the first few seasons on TNG aired concurrently with the TOS movies. It’s never occurred to me that TNG is anything but a continuation of TOS, it’s Even in the name, not a spin-off, not a reboot, not an alternate timeline (until many movies later), a continuation of a story about imperialism struggling internally with morality and existential philosophy (vs. evil empire fighting rebels). New shows are welcome to be spin-offs, reboots, and alternate timelines, but (for me) not TNG.

Odd design choice. My oven turns the light on when the door is opened (in addition to a manual option). Maybe somebody “repaired” your oven at some point and replaced the door switch for the light with the wrong type? I had to be aware of this when I replaced a similar switch connected to a relay that turned a light on in a closet when you opened the door. I don’t remember the specific jargon at the moment, but it boiled down to whether or not the switch was open or closed by the action of depressing the switch. I think the language might have been something like normally open or normally closed.

Does your Dubai chocolate hate have to do with the arguments made in this opinion article, which basically boils down to the popularity of foods and culture being exploited as propaganda, obscuring atrocities committed by authoritarian regimes? If so, that was not at all clear from your post. (I’m still unclear what the ethnicity of the chef has to do with anything.) Any cultural artifact or pastiche is free game for the propaganda machines of the powerful and elite. But those same associations are a double edged sword, hanging a lantern on the same atrocities the regime wishes to obscure. In the end, I feel it is more productive to embrace the fad, eat the chocolate (sourced as ethically as possible), and exploit the popularity as an opportunity to illuminate rather than add to the hate.

That’s fucking amazing. I love it. I want games like that for real now (they say, knowing full well that historically games made from movie and TV IP have been largely awful, alas):

• Asteroids, but with Star Wars ships.
• Galaga, but you fly voyager through Borg space, trans warp conduits, etc. Occasionally you pick up a clone or alternate timeline Voyager to fight along side you.
• Space invaders I think would also be a good with a Starship Troopers skin and bugs lobbing rocks at your bases, could also be good in the style of Scorched Earth (or Worms Armageddon).
• An Apple II style text only adventure game in Deep Space Nine.
• A farming/trading/city sim on Babylon 5.
• Civilization, but it’s Babylon 5, Star Trek, or Star Wars, Dune, etc.
• Old school 2.5D Zelda adventure game, but it’s Firefly or The Expanse.
• A Mario Bros. game but it’s Farscape.
• Mario kart, also Farscape.
• Leisure Suit Larry in the style of Lexx.

The only Star Trek or Star Wars shirt I currently own is black with yellow gold lettering saying “Star Trek” in the Star Wars font. I think it makes some people uncomfortable. My S.O. hates it. I think it’s hilarious and I know immediately what type of “nerd” I’m dealing with based on people’s reactions to it. I suspect most people don’t realize it’s a joke or they are worried that I don’t know it’s a joke.

I used to think coconut water tasted a little funny (odd mix of sweet, earthy, and umami, not like the coconut flesh at all). Then one day after a particularly long hot hike, I tried it again. I’d been hiking through a natural area that had lots of coconut palms. Crews had been clearing out some invasive species. This is relevant because they’d been using the same trails and had cut open and presumably drunk the water from dozens of coconuts along the way as they worked. These guys must know something I didn’t, so I looked into coconut water as a drink because I’d never heard of such a thing at the time.

Anyway, this is all to say that I gave coconut water a second chance when my body really needed it and although it tasted exactly as I remembered it I suddenly found that it tasted fucking amazing. I’ve been a convert since then. I used to drink Gatorade, but now Gatorade just tastes salty, like Kool-aid made with ball sweat by comparison.

When I call a fern (or wolf, crab, crow, whale, shark), at that level of syntactical broadly used common word I’m mostly talking about the phenotype, not the genotype. If someone was saying something about a specific fern, then we can argue against those romantic idea of deep time, a little. I mean, we’re probably all descendants of some ancient panspermia event anyway if you want to feel some connection to the ancient forgotten past.

Self-hosting is inherently not low effort. This isn’t memes or shitposts. This is people helping people that are trying to help themselves, a.k.a. people making an effort. Communities rely on the discretion of mods and rules specific to the community focus. If this community didn’t have some kind of bar to meet for low effort posts it would drive away participants and contributors more interested in higher effort and more interesting topics. It gets real old seeing people ask and answer the same basic questions about Plex, Jellyfin, *arrs, and docker all the time. Worrying about if this rule will be abused seems premature. Besides (as others have pointed out) there are other communities with similar interests, if you’re that concerned that your spammy no-context YouTube video got deleted, please go try your luck elsewhere.

You want mpd to server and play the music, connected with a web front end (there are a few to choose from) accessible on the private store wifi. You should probably serve this frontend only to a certain machine on the network (like the managers computer in the back) and lock everything else out. The last time I ripped CDs on Linux I used whipper, which I believe was the successor to morituri. This is all only legal if the CDs they have already included the licensing fees to play them publicly or are themselves freely licensed. There are sources of freely licensed music out there that you can play publicly without paying.
