I’ve thrown in about $40 total since I joined. I should do monthly but I’m trying to cut down on subscriptions since I have a bad habit of signing up for a bunch and forgetting to cancel. I’ll try to make sure I actively donate regularly though as long as I’m using the instance. I appreciate the effort the admins have gone into making this instance and I want to do my part to help ease potential stress on the financial side at least

Fediverse@lemmy.ml•do you think the fediverse could replace popular social media
3·3 years agoNo I don’t think it will. I would be shocked if Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, LinkedIn, etc etc ever truly went away. If people remain dedicated to improving and promoting the fediverse it could carve out it’s own space in the social media landscape. And once that happens you never know what the future holds. But I’d be surprised if it took over everything in the space
There’s one hosted on lemmy.ml, might be better just to use one another community has already hosted and has subscribers for: !paranormal@lemmy.ml
Garrathian@beehaw.orgtoGeneral Programming Discussion@lemmy.ml•With so many people migrating over to the fediverse recently, will there be an eternal september 2?
3·3 years agoI’ve never heard of the term eternal september until now, that’s pretty neat. Makes me wonder what 1980s usenet groups/conversations looked like. I wonder if DOS or other OS’s at the time had a navigable interface for it

Technology@beehaw.org•what would Reddit need to do to get you to go back
7·3 years agoI haven’t completely left, and to be honest the only way I’d completely leave is if the niche communities I cared about died (or were active here). That being said I’ve noticed my reddit usage has plummeted over the last week. I used to basically live on that dumb site and now I only check it maybe once or twice a day for a couple minutes

Technology@beehaw.org•Can you code? We need your help to improve lemmyEnglish
8·3 years agoI have front end and back end experience but work has me kind of bogged down this week. If nobody has stepped up by Sunday I should be free to start taking a look at it at the very least.

Chat@beehaw.org•What are some communities that aren't here yet that you hope to see in the future?English
4·3 years agoFor an askreddit replacement there is an asklemmy community on the lemmy.ml instance !asklemmy@lemmy.ml
Honestly though I hope it doesn’t become too much like askreddit. That sub got increasingly repetitive with it’s questions (i guess there’s only so many questions to ask internet strangers though)
Go to the communities page on here and it will bring up a list of communities. Select the ‘all’ tab and it will bring up all the communities hosted on here and on other instances that are linked with beehaw. So you may see a ‘Technology’ community and a ‘Technology@lemmy.ml’ community. The first one is the technology community hosted here on beehaw, and the second one is the technology community hosted on lemmy.ml.
Now beehaw users can’t make instances (as decided by the beehaw admins), but there are instances you can create your own communities. So you will definitely run across some more niche ones from those external instances in that communities page that you can access and subscribe/post to

Technology@beehaw.org•Twitter US ad sales plunged 59%, and internal forecasts are grim, NYT reportsEnglish
0·3 years agoMusk set a goal of making half of Twitter’s revenue subscription-based, but his revamped Twitter Blue subscription service got off to a slow start. As the NYT report said, reversing the decline in advertising “is crucial because ads have long made up 90 percent of the company’s revenue.”
Well it looks like he’s well on his way to succeeding in that goal if the ad revenue keeps dropping

I think we are a long, long ways off before we could even get to the ‘could’ phase of the discussion, let alone asking if we should.
