Because I have genuinely never worked at any company where the main thing holding up development was that developers weren’t typing fast enough.
When you’re vibe coding, you need to narrate long prompts, including things like “And remember not to hallucinate or make any errors.” All that is a lot faster to say than type.
Clearly, you’re not vibe coding, and your job will be (checks notes) automated away by someone with a #grindset.

I was talking to an acquaintance and she was taking AI course.
She was taught to “validate” LLM infos by asking the same question in a different model.
This is an actual university course.
I was baffled. There is no guarantee that both models aren’t wrong. But speaking to people that use LLMs, this is a common strategy.
Companies (garbage ones) where they measure “productivity” by AI token use, number of code commits, or lines of code written.
I’ve definitely had coworkers with injuries for whom typing was absolutely not a speedy input.
Assuming this is a real post and not satire, my best guess is that they don’t think it’s a bottleneck, but still believe a way to talk to the computer without disturbing others in the office is useful. Like if Tide detergent said it would save your marriage – they don’t think it really will, but the ad is humourous and likely to gain attention because of it.
Hang on. They had to ship three major updates in a single morning? How the hell is their workflow so bad that they have to- Oh yeah. Vibecoding.

And all without a single junior dev in the open office hearing their genius. Aside from the junior dev who bought the fucking thing in the vain hope they could roleplay as a more competent employee. That junior dev can hear themself going “no, fuck, delete, how do I- no, stop typing, you stupid fucking thing”, which I assume counts as “genius”.
I genuinely can’t distinguish between satire and reality anymore.

Follow the industry trends, or at the bare minimum be able to speak “intelligently” about them. Management just LOVES buzzwords. It sucks, but that’s the reality we have to deal with.
Focus on soft skills, not just technical skills.
Have a process to your thinking. Like a logical proof, show your work!
Leverage every tool you can for your job search.

If you’re still in college, try to get an internship. Once you have something on your resume, it’s a lot easier to get into places. Plus try to network and stuff. Getting recommended by someone is much more likely to result in an interview.
The AI shit is really rocking the boat right now, but ultimately I don’t think it’s sustainable. I don’t know what the future of dev work will look like or when it’ll balance out, but right now, these AI agents are effectively heavily subsidized by investors. At some point, they’ll need to either turn to the public (IPO) as a last resort, or actually begin to turn a profit. I think this happened with Microsoft’s Copilot. “Tokenpocalypse” was the term that got thrown around. They can’t undercharge for this stuff forever.
Even if AI does end up being a significant part of work, actually knowing how to code will make you better at using it. Your skills aren’t useless. You’ll be better at noticing when the agents make shitty code or shitty decisions. If agentic development ends up being too costly for everyday use, you’ll still be able to assist with “manual” code writing.
AI companies over hype their products and say they’re world shattering as a way of marketing. They say the idea of developers are over because they want people to invest and buy their product. Agentic coding has gotten pretty fucking impressive in the past few months, but something’s gonna break at some point. The bill always comes due.
But yeah. Internship and networking. Learn AI, but don’t eschew traditional development practices entirely.

Programming seems like a uniquely awful use case for this.

Okay, hear me out. Actually use it as a gimp mask, for BDSM stuff. Put on big headphones and play your own voice back into your ears full volume while someone edges you and slaps you around a bit, forcing you to moan into your own ears super loud if you can’t keep your mouth shut and stop complaining, while also muffling your cries so nobody but you has to hear it.

what i find interesting is that this app superwhisper is just AI speech to text, mostly based on local open weights models like whisper (though also giving access to proprietary cloud-only models). they’re charging a subscription for text to speech. and it’s all for the sake of slopcoding faster. amazing. if you haven’t seen someone use speech to text to slopcode, look up videos of people sincerely using AI to slopcode, it’s incredible how the paths of software engineering diverged.
edit: and of course the main bottleneck when having an AI do shit isn’t the talking, it’s the AI actually doing the stuff that by far takes the longest.
edit again: i missed the free plan, oops. still, a speech to text subscription is ridiculous.
I subscribed to Superwhisper a couple of years ago when one arm wasn’t working. It allowed me to type emails and slack messages much faster than using one hand. It worked way better than the inbuilt text-to-speech in the OS. But slop code wasn’t a thing at the time and it all ran locally, it was great. Now I’m back to using my hands to type like a human.
I’m glad to hear you’re better. I understand paying for something that works better, but I guess I’m still stuck in ye olden days where software was a one time purchase and if they really needed more money they’d release yearly major updates. And I’m not convinced that switching between a locally run whisper model and something proprietary in the cloud makes that much of a difference. Especially with the privacy concerns. Of course I could probably be convinced, but I don’t want to.
It all ran locally, which was great. As new models came out I could download them. Guess they’ve chased the hype. Shame.
