Here’s a TrekMovie exclusive that lives up to the hype.
Strange New Worlds co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers has revealed/confirmed that the show’s bridge and other sets at CBS Stages in Mississauga have remained intact pending decisions by the new Paramount owners on the Year One continuation into the 1701’s first missions under Captain James T. Kirk.
“That makes this the big decision for them, because, it’s about, do you hold on to the sets, currently? As I said, they have not been destroyed, so we’re waiting to find out what they want to do.”
So, while Paul Wesley has already committed to season three of AppleTV’s historical romance offering The Buccaneers, it seems that a continuation of the Enterprise’s early years is still a live possibility.
I was surprised how much I liked Paul Wesley’s portrayal of Kirk. Wouldn’t be upset by this.
Same. I really liked him.
This was an problem that Picard showrunner Terry Matalas ran into when he pitched his Star Trek: Legacy spinoff series set on board the USS-Enterprise-G (formerly USS Titan), as all of those sets were destroyed immediately after Picard season 3 wrapped up, adding significant startup costs to recreate everything for a new show.
Ah so that’s why that sets are relevant. No sets no spinoff.
Picard was produced in California, seemingly a condition of Patrick Stewart.
Paramount was able to get a one-time California state grant to defray costs but it was produced on leased soundstages rather than Paramount’s own.
This meant that there was a very short window after production ended before the sets had to be broken down. Some of the set elements and properties were packed and shipped (perhaps to Toronto?) It seems that the Enterprise D bridge reconstruction was transferred to the Roddenberry archive.
That’s some serious clout to swing around, but I hope it wasn’t medically advised. 🥲
It seems that CBS senior executives really wanted a show with Patrick Stewart as Picard.
Many attempts to pitch a show were made but it wasn’t until Chabon flattered him into reading a concept that Stewart would even meet with the creators.
CBS and other studios had access to the state grants to incent the major streamers to keep production in California and made the choice to blow theirs on Picard.
Ok, phew. 😅
Oh, so that’s why…
Oh for fuck’s sake. Can we end the prequel train already?
Strange New Worlds is great. Prequels can drag a franchise down if they’re low-effort cashgrabs but SNW is the most consistently good Star Trek has ever been.
I do enjoy Strange New Worlds. It’s almost what I want out of NuTrek, I just wish it was a new crew on a new ship. Keep the cast, I like them, but I don’t like that NuTrek is 82% based on nostalgia
Personally I’m happy if there are no more pre-TOS series. And I really am “meh” about Paul Wesley’s Kirk so I don’t need a series with him in the lead.
I mean if they make it, I’ll check it out. But I’ll be perfectly fine if they just don’t.
