As far as discovery. Any algorithm helps you find stuff you like. You can always hit random for something different.

that seems to xefeat the purpose. i used pintrest once for office ideas. so if i found bookshelves i like i got many bookshelves that were similar and linked to places to buy. i would think thats how they get money.
