Linux@lemmy.ml•choosing a version of Linux for my momEnglish
2·6 months agoMy grandma got along with Mint for Facebook browsing and KPatience.
If your mom is more into using real apps, plus the Windows UI, and you’re comfortable with some setup, I’d highly recommend Debian 13 with KDE Plasma and Flatpak, with the Flatpak-Discover integration. That’ll allow her to use lightweight, stable apps from apt, or more recent, but larger apps from Flathub, and install it all herself through Discover. Honestly, there should be a distro for that.
I’d be using that myself if it weren’t for some very specific software I need from the AUR.
Not really, electricity is pretty cheap when you live right beside the largest hydro plant in South America.
My server is a loose motherboard with a loose PSU, thrown into the living room TV rack, which I leave open for cooling. It’s a repurposed (free) Athlon, DDR2. I only use it for smb and git backups, and project sharing between my desktop and laptop. What amazes me most is my IT coworkers don’t find that a perfectly acceptable scenario.
I mean, literally just lean it against the wall, at the very least…

2·6 months agoI mean, I agree that in an ideal world, people would just not use TikTok, and let it die. But they use it, because it hijacks their dopamine response, it uses pavlovian and skinnerian conditioning to trap people into cycles of behavioral control, and they don’t know or care enough to stop using it. It’s literally the same thing a drug like weed does to your dopamine receptors.
And you could say “just don’t use it yourself”, the problem is this mass compliance leaks onto every other platform. Stories/shorts were a Snapchat issue, now they’re an internet issue. Everyone is getting brainwashed, and as a result, we get shit software spilling over from their shit platforms.
Maybe I got a little too doomer with this one, but how could I not, when taking about modern day social media…

10·6 months agoDecent buffering, decent scrubbing with thumbnail preview, double tap to skip 10 sec forward or back, proper fullscreen on desktop, and orientation on mobile. That’s just to cite the very least. Imagine how good the YouTube player is, and how smoothly it works 90% of the time. Pornhub works that smoothly 100% of the time, with 90% of the features.
TikTok doesn’t even let you scrub, at all.

331·6 months agoI’m actually amazed by how the Pornhub and Xvideos players, after all this time, are still better than the Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Instagram, and TikTok players, like it’s not even comparable. The way people can just accept whatever slop any corporate will feed them is just insane to me…
