Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Is self-hosting becoming too gatekept by power users?English
3·2 months agoI agree with a lot of the folks here. I don’t think it’s gate-kept. It’s just part of self hosting. I have a YouTube channel dedicated to teaching people about self josting, open source, and how to get it all running. There are great projects out there that provide incredibly powerful UIs, TrueNAS, OpenMediaVault, Unraid, Proxmox, NextCloud, HomeAssistant, NetBird, Pangolin, NGinX Proxy Manager, Portainer, and so many more. All designed to make self hosting easier and safer. I know 8 or 10 other creators who also do self hosting and how to’s. It does require learning, time, and dedication. As does anything worth while.
Cheap VPS with Pangolin for Wireguard and reverse proving through the tunnel.

6·7 months agoIf you can get It’s blessing I’d suggest something like KASM workspaces or WebTops, basically a Linux desktop in the browser.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What is your self-hosting setup for home thermostat?English
1·1 year agoI use an ecobee termostat with Wifi and three extra sensores places around my home. Home Assistant already has an add-on for it, add the thermostat card and it goes to work. Set whatever automations you want.

5·1 year agoYou might reach out to the open source initiative if your app is open source. They have lawyers, and may be willing to provide guidance at the very least. I’m just guessing, and don’t work for the OSI, nor know for sure whether they will or wont help in any way. Just another place to look. At the very least they may be able to suggest attorneys who might be willing to help out.
I use the tp-link EAP615 wall Apps, they are great and run OpenWRT like a champ.

1·1 year agoYou might look into Netdata, I think it meets your requirements, it’s essentially plug and play, but I believe you can add alerts as well. Been a while since I looked at it, but they’ve put out some big updates lately.

1·1 year agoGlad you got Coturn working, what was it?
Haven’t messed with retention and deletion yet. Not enough data to mess with it so far.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Trouble setting up sliding sync with matrixEnglish
3·1 year agoJust and FYI those are my pages and Video, and I also don’t have sliding sync working yet. I work on it here and there, but other than Element X, I’ve had no issues getting clients to connect to my servers running dendrite. I’ll update those docs, and probably do an update video when I get it working on Dendrite.
This! If you can get them for UK voltages and plow style. They are inexpensive and handle 15A, and give the power consumption data as well.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Whats the best/cheapest email service to hook into?English
8·1 year agoI have been using purelymail with my own domains, and at $10 a year with no limit on domains or users under those domains, it’s amazing value.
Been using Purelymail, full email, but SMTP as well, and love the service thus far.
Short answer, yes, you can forward port 11500 to port 443, but it means you’ll have to go to www.yourdomain.com:11500 and this may or may not work great with you applications inside the network depending on how they are set to run.

3·1 year agoI used to use one years ago called yEd graph editor. Supremely amazing. It is free to use, but I don’t think it’s open source.

1·1 year agoI’ve seen this project just get better and better. Thes improvements are awesome. The tool gives you so many ways to do things, it’s amazing. I covered it on my channel a while back, and someone who watched reported a bug and it was fixed within a couple of days. Try that with any of the big tech giants. You all rock! Well done!

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Why is replacement for home device controls so complicated?English
3·2 years agoTHIS.
Home Assistant is the brain of the operation. Your smart phone is just an arm or hand in the operation. It’s the same for any of the services you perceive to be just using your smart phone. They actually call out to servers owned by the various companies, and then return requested operations to your devices at home. So with Home Assistant you have the opportunity to use devices and a server that all remain in your own network. Your data and information aren’t being sent to a third party. This, of course, depends on the devices you buy.
But that’s the power behind Home Assistant.
Veloren has been a blast on my family’s self hosted system.
