He is Vigo! You are like the buzzing of flies to him!

Oh no, it’s salt water!

Keep in mind that just because the item is legendary doesn’t mean that they get to keep it. After it has served it’s purpose it could be destroyed or if they do get to keep it then it could be severely weakened or damaged, or it could even be something that isn’t meant for them. Obviously if they don’t get to keep it they would still get something out of the creation process.
This gives you some freedom to go absolutely bonkers with it since it’s only going to be used for a little bit.
Some personal ideas of mine
A Giant Mecha to fight a Kaiju.
A dying god needs a new body.
A Mastersword like weapon. A powerful weapon that works for a time and then needs to recharge.
Are the Warforged a thing in your world? They could literally be the father of an entire race.
Are Airships a thing? If no then they could invent that, if yes they can create an upgraded version. This has a benefit of being a boon for the whole party.
My personal favorite idea, assuming they’re into it. Let them design their own creation, they are the inventor after all.
Player 1’s father is obviously the Warlord.
Player 2’s father is also the Warlord. He killed the father in the same way Darth Vader killed Anakin Skywalker.
Player 3’s mother sold their soul for the Warlord to fall in love with her.
Player 4’s Father is the Warlord and Player 3’s Mother. Except after they got together they settled down for a happily ever after.

Just go hangout in a whale for a while. Maybe they’ll give up.
The Barbarian even has advantage on Dex saves!

In a world full of magic, at a certain level casters with Counter spell will be necessary for the survival of certain groups. It’s just logical

Maybe she grew up in an abbey or something else like that and never encountered it.
They must have proficiency with a disguise kit

I saw somewhere a homebrew that to use a Potion for Self is Bonus Action or Action. When used a Bonus Action you roll as normal, but as an action you heal the full amount.
When giving to others it’s still the same rules.

Ok, but if I don’t then how will I reasonably justify being a chaos goblin?

So, she tricked her god instead?

That’s Yamcha in the hole.
Honestly if you used Yamcha on the 2 Goku panels it would’ve worked better, on account of Yamcha looking awesome as hell at first.

Thanks to our natural language rules we can easily interpret Life Force as a synonym for HP

I’d possibly go for it as well, Except there would be a downside to this approach.
They could grab magic initiate, or multiclass, to pick up cure wounds to heal more and it would actually work without having to ignore a part of the spell, or the RAI

The mere act of including “from others” is all the proof required.
If Self was valid for the Siphon effect they wouldn’t have had to mention it at all, since Self is automatically included as a valid target unless otherwise stated.

You’re a valid target for the spell, but the heal doesn’t trigger cause the target isn’t someone other than yourself.

It specifically makes a point of saying “can siphon life from others to heal your wounds”.
So, Self is a valid target for the damage. However, the heal doesn’t occur because the target is not someone else.
If self was valid for the siphon there would be no reason to include the “from others” rider
Have your DM introduce a storyline that starts off with interrograting drug dealers on roof tops.
