I would have happily watched more, but season one tells a complete story so if it’s over then it ends as a solid miniseries.
The show was a hit with multiple Emmy nods without a large campaign behind the scenes and great audience and critical reception. There is only 3 reasons that you don’t continue the series. They originally planned it as a one and done (this is a comic book series with a major star attached and there wasn’t a peep about this in any of the promotions), The star or, less likely, the writing staff, wanted out or died, and finally, the program was on a Streaming Service that does not want to pay talent what they are worth and a hit show is the death knell of your IP, as they would rather roll the dice on a new show full of nobody’s rather than pay what a hit show with a completed contract would cost to negotiate.
I think it’s a combination of all three.
Reportedly the show cost $400 million to make, that’s Game of Thrones level budget and they don’t have any dragons.
Cage is new to the TV world, I would bet if he hadn’t voiced a similar (“the same but not the same”) character already he probably wouldn’t have explored this project. Cage doesn’t have many sequel films. He has National Treasure 1 & 2 and then Ghost Rider 1 & 2. Based on interviews he was excited to try out TVmand while I think he’s up for trying new things, I don’t think he was ready to settle into this role for years. I think IF they had a great story and were willing to pay for another huge budget, then he’d be in. But I think he was safer with it being a one and done.
Well there was the plus that he wanted to explore the more exaggerated melodrama of the character, and it did have allot in common with B&W movie actors and it was shot in Color and B&W. However doing this series could have scratched that itch and maybe showed Hollywood that under the right circumstances he might be trying to get a movie melodrama in the style of the 30’s to 50’s.
It was a joke of a show anyway, it wasn’t noir at all.
