A Secret Service officer is accused of masturbating naked in a Miami hotel hallway after following a woman to her room.

John Andrew Spillman, 33, a member of the United States Secret Service’s uniformed division, was arrested around midnight Monday and charged with indecent exposure, according to an arrest affidavit from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, as reported by NBC News, The New York Times and The Guardian.

The alleged incident took place late Sunday night at the DoubleTree by Hilton Miami Airport & Convention Center, where deputies said they found Spillman naked and “masturbating at the end of the hallway” on the sixth floor.

A woman staying at the hotel told investigators that Spillman had followed her and other guests from the lobby to their floor, prompting them to quickly retreat to their room because she was “in fear for their lives,” according to the affidavit. She later saw him outside the room, the document states.

Hotel security also told deputies they observed Spillman engaging in the same behavior on the floor before law enforcement arrived, according to the affidavit. He was taken into custody just after midnight Monday without incident.

Spillman, who is from Marble Falls, Texas, is based in Washington, D.C., and joined the Secret Service in 2019. He had been in South Florida as part of an external screening security detail tied to President Donald Trump’s visit to Trump National Doral for the 2026 PGA Cadillac Championship. Officials said his assignment had concluded Sunday and that he was off duty at the time of the alleged conduct.

The Secret Service confirmed Spillman’s arrest and said he has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal case and an internal investigation.

“The alleged conduct is unacceptable and stands in stark contrast to the professionalism and integrity that I demand of our personnel,” Richard Macauley, chief of the agency’s uniformed division, said in a statement. “This agency takes these matters with the utmost seriousness.”

Spillman was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade County on a $1,000 bond, according to authorities. He appeared in bond court on Monday, where the presiding judge made no mention of his federal employment, according to local reporting.

Online inmate records for the Miami-Dade Corrections system were unavailable due to a maintenance notice, making it unclear whether Spillman had posted bond as of publication.

Spillman does not appear to have an attorney listed in court records as of Tuesday, and the county public defender’s office declined to comment, according to NBC News.

A hearing in the case is scheduled for May 27.
