It is addiction just like any other. I felt like I can’t quit it, I feel like I will lose connection with the friends and family that is still using it. That it keeps me informed and other BS.

After deleting it on 2nd try (after navigating the maze to delete, they gave 30 days to change mind, hoping I won’t be able to resist and will log in. And of course I couldn’t resist the first time and logged back in) I realized that I haven’t lost anything of value and the people that I still matter I have other ways to contact.

      It was just an illusion.

      Edit: fixed

I deleted my facebook account in 2022 and have essentially not been contacted by friends since, so there’s that

I moved to a new town recently. People don’t give out their phone numbers to connect. They give out their FB and Instagram accounts. Not having either is perceived as weird.

          Hope this helps.

Facebook is something most people have and use to connect because most people don’t care about the privacy invasions or manipulative algorithms. It’s a fucked up world, not a fucked up town.

I already said I recently moved. I’ve moved 3 times in the past 10 years and it’s all the same. Maybe people used Snapchat or Instagram more often than Facebook when I was younger but it’s all the same privacy invasive shit.

The majority tolerate it, that’s why Meta is so successful as a company.

                Hope this helps.

Marketplace can be good for local deals and I can’t fault anyone for taking advantage of that

Marketplace is the one and only reason I havent deleted my account. It sucks but it is by far the best way to buy and sell.

Through no fault of my own, the people I talk to (family) are tied to the FB ecosystem…and they are very resilient as to leaving it.

2026 will have to be the year of “please, for the love of all that is holy, can we switch to Signal”

Marketplace has killed most other local trading stuff sites. Craigslist is still limping along, but has far less available at higher prices than FBMP. I’m happy to hear of viable alternatives, especially for used vehicles, tools and equipment. I’ve saved a lot of money on my business and hobbies that way, but would leave in a heartbeat if there’s a real competitor.

Aside from the already-mentioned marketplace, social networks like FB are fit well for localized giveaways. Where I am, the local analog of FB has groups where bakeries and cafes give out food remaining at the end of the day.

One population that this particularly pertains to are homeless people. Some folks get surprised when a homeless person has a smartphone, but it’s a means for finding help and resources.

I mean a platform that’s used in my country. It’s still centralized, and the practices are not much better, probably only because they haven’t yet gotten around to all the same shady shit.

Eh at least they presumably pay attention, moderate it, and tailor it to your country.

One of my issues with FB is that it mind as well be run from Alpha Centauri. There’s nothing “human” or local about, its a gaping maw mixed with tons of other predatory service.

Have been for a while. Decided to try to make a fake Facebook account mid-laat year to use marketplace since it’s the dominant platform in my area. As soon as I saw this I just closed the browser tab.

I had an account but deleted it years ago, during covid my kids school put a lot of information on their Facebook account so I tried making a new account. Facebook told me there wasn’t enough proof I was real, so I made a fake account with a super common name, they were fine with that. So now I have a Facebook account that I occasionally use to repost sports articles,I have zero interest in sports but my guy seems to like them.

wdym? facebook automatically showed us it used facial recognition at least as far back as 2007 by asking us to click boxes on faces and subsequently asking us to label them… We really did all of the heavy lifting for them. -I got out while i could in ~2018

It’s been like that for quite a while. I remember deleting all big-tech accounts in 2019, and shortly after, Facebook started requiring login for full public page access. Therefore I created a burner account using a ‘this person does not exist’ picture, which provided me short-lived access after manual review. For account recovery, I was required to supply additional selfies (or even video-selfies?), but at that point I gave up.

I don’t even use facial unlock on my phone. I enter the pin every time.

Unfortunately, to access the Social Security site, I was required to send a picture of my face and driver’s license. So, I suppose Trump will sell that to whoever want’s to buy it now.

if you’re using an iphone, the avoidance is just your own inconvenience. face id on iphone all happens locally, on a dedicated security chip in your phone. id be much more concerned with having any pictures of myself on google photos

I went to create an account a while ago. When I saw this, I was this close to sending them a picture of my dick and balls. But I thought myself better than these fucking creeps who insist on knowing how many wrinkles our ass has.

People who are saying to just delete Facebook or don’t use it aren’t wrong of course (I say that myself, to be clear I hate FB); but as someone who tries to buy and sell things secondhand (I see it as being environmentally responsible), this is largely becoming impossible to do locally without Facebook Marketplace. I honestly have some grudging respect for Facebook’s ability to survive just when you think they might start to become irrelevant. Things were headed that way for them, then they bought Instagram. And then the last couple years, it was sort of common knowledge that the only people who use it anymore are old folks and Nazis… and then FB Marketplace kills Craigslist and becomes the only app people use for local buying/selling.

Idk maybe there’s some opportunity here for some local buy/sell federated service?

No need of an Fakebook account that it can track you, if your family and friends have an account with your data, mail and phone in their agenda. With this also Zuckerbot know it. Apart of all (pixel)tracking API in all websites with an FB link. Because of this, I’ve blocked all FB services in Portmaster, I can’t even access it, but with it, I’m not longer exist for FB.

If buying shit at Goodwill and selling it online is how you choose to make your living, then I suppose you’re “stuck” with FB.

But, if you are making a living at it, or significantly supplementing your income, then your privacy is the cost of doing business. At least you are profiting something from the deal.

If buying shit at Goodwill and selling it online is how you choose to make your living

what made you come to that idea? they didn’t say they did it for profit but if you are broke (like me) or environmentally conscious you would try to buy things second hand when needed and sell whatever you don’t need anymore (because the last time I checked everyone needs to pay bills)

they have a point, facebook is the website mostly used in my country where people buy and sell second hand and it still is my biggest regret after deleting my account
