As far as ones who actually did things there I’m not sure that Hawking would have even been physically capable at a point where he was famous.

Arch has a bit of a steeper learning curve. Ubuntu is probably the most “mainstream”, but I prefer Mint (based on Ubuntu) for some user-friendly changes. PopOS (already based on Ubuntu) is also supposed to be a bit more gaming centric if you’ve got an Nvidia card.
I’ve got an AMD kit in my main machine and Nvidia/Intel in my laptop and both work fine with most Steam games using Proton.
Makes sense.
When I spend a lot of time doing 3D design work I find myself looking at the world afterwards in terms of underlying mathematics, angles and shapes. Like I’ll look at a cabinet and see rectangles and cylindrical cuts that could reproduce it in 3d, or a lamp-post as a circle extruded along a path.
People who are really into rocks probably notice more about that stuff because their brains are hyper-focused on such
Yeah I’d say capitalism ruined the Internet, rather than the other way around. Early Internet was janky but amazing

I let my young’ns watch a curated selection of Lower Decks - Sans certain episodes - and they love it

I run backups to a USB drive which is way to grab in the event of an emergency. Just make sure you test them every more and again, and possibly only connect it when needed if you’re at all worried about malware (a cryptolocker will happily take out any attached storage if your machine is infected).
A lot of that stack looks similar to mine, though I’m running bigger hardware for various reasons. You might want to go with something with more cores than an i5 depending on how much you find yourself utilizing.
Have you considered Nextcloud for documents and syncing functionality? I went through a few ways of running it before ended up with the Snap package which has been fairly solid for over a year now (Docker was good for setup, but upgrading was problematic if not kept up with religiously)
Vaultwarden is Excellent.
Calibre-Web is good, especially if paired with the application to “extract” books, and an app like Moon+ on mobiles
Audiobookshelf is pretty solid. Pairs well with Libation.
HASS I initially ran on my server in a container but moved to dedicated hardware so updating and reboots didn’t break automatons. Got a HASS Yellow for the PoE and Zigbee.
If you’re looking for audio/video library management, JellyFin is pretty easy to get running and has apps for phones plus many TVs. Finamp is a good mobile app for the music part
I’ve been migrating to Soverin and like it thus far. I’ve only done email and my calendaring though.
It’s not free but it’s also not overly costly.
You can also use a router that can run wireguard/openvpn and have that run the tunnel back to home for you. I’ve got a portable GL-Inet router with OpenWRT that I use for this when I’m on the road

23·9 months agoI didn’t really get the allure of it TBH. For most home-based nerds a simple Wireguard host (or OpnSense, OpenWRT etc running such) should be fine, and there are better options for commercial from better-known vendors in the network security space
You can fit an awful lot of Perl into one line too if you minimize it. It’ll be completely unreadable to most anyone, but it’ll run

1·10 months agoI didn’t actually know the server code was published. It’d be cool if the client allowed multiple servers so you could talk to people on the “normal” master while also thing a private instance

10·11 months agoYeah, it follows a lot of the “futuristic parallels to modern day issues” that we saw with ToS and TNG, while at the same time adding in humor that ranges from tongue-in-cheek to outright raunchy. I can’t imagine a TNG episode that would address “holodeck sex addiction” but Orville actually manages to do a pretty good job of stradding seriousness of that issue along with humor.
For the more serious stuff: imagine an alliance when it’s discovered that one of the members has done (and is still doing) some stuff that’s pretty strongly against the morals of the rest. If called on it they threaten to pull out. While all are in the middle of a war for survival. And they’re also one of the biggest weapons suppliers
That’s pretty close to some issues today while also being years old.

I’d go for Leonardo. The others - while I understand things at a basic level - I’d likely not be able to understand most of their fields.
Maybe Tesla but I’m not sure if the conversation would end up centered around some of the neat science stuff I could grasp or pigeons with laser-eyes …
