It is good to see that Hammond of Texas has not fallen in battle.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Launcher Recomendtion for media centerEnglish
2·1 year agoYup, that’s the one. The sponsorblock app integrates directly with the youtube app. I don’t recall any config at all. Its made by siku2.
I’ve had the youtube app crash, but its infrequent and mainly seems to have something to do with it starting a new video without stopping a currently playing one.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Launcher Recomendtion for media centerEnglish
2·1 year agoIt is cat and mouse, but it has an issue maybe every year or so, and they generally resolve it same day or next day with an app update. The hardest part is generating your own google api keys, but there are straightforward guides and you just need to do it once.
The upside? No ads at all, sponsorblock integration, and an easy 10ft interface that works great with a remote. No shitty web site to navigate with a mouse. Just a list of your videos each day. Click and play.
I cant speak to your overheating issues. I have kodi running on 4gb raspi 5s with the default case/fan. No problems. An external usb fan might help you out. I’ve used one of these with a raspi in the past. Its roughly the same size as the raspi, but dead silent. Moves insane air.

World News@beehaw.org•Dutch government collapses after Geert Wilders’ far-right party quits
3·1 year agoA very helpful idiot. His party is polling 1% above the liberal party at 29% to 28%. The other parties in his coalition government won big in Nov. 2023, but have both dropped to 1% in the last two years.
His dropping out and dissolving the goverment should lead to left or left leaning leadership in the Netherlands.
Lawerence systems has a recent video that is pretty indepth.
The scale is different. Dynamics is mainly an ERP like Sage or SAP. It’s something you could coordinate the movement of millions of goods through, and tens of thousands of people.
Access is a database with a GUI that you can slap more GUIs onto at your own peril. Dynamics is an iteration of " Microsoft Great plains" that was turned into an unholy monstrosity to compete with Oracle/IBM, etc
You will spend millions of dollars deploying it. It will both be bewildering too much and not enough.
Drastically different products. Its basically a full ERP with a full CRM build in. It massively outsizes Access, a DB/DBMS, in both complexity and abject stupidity.

TenForward: Where Every Vulcan Knows Your Name@lemmy.world•It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop... ever, until you are dead!
4·1 year agoOf course, but you’re already immortal in a TNG world. Transporters can easily modify your body to give you eternal youth, and of course cure any disease or injury. Just make sure your brainwaves/synapses are updated in near real time and refresh the rest of the body daily.
Why no one actually opts for it is beyond me.
It’s a software suite for managing company finances, but can do way, way more if you keep slapping bullshit on it. You can run a retail operation through it, for example.
It’s a big, irritating “do anything financial for any type of business” app, and like most “all in one” tools is horribly over and under designed.
Working with it is brittle, stupid, complicated and expensive.

5·1 year agoIts actually a trick question, because the instant you step onto the transporter pad and beam out you die, making the snails chase moot.
Beat the “immortal snail is chasing you forever by vaporizing your body into data and having a new clone of you made elsewhere” with this one weird trick.

World News@beehaw.org•Ontario approves $15 billion plan to build small modular nuclear reactors
6·1 year agoThe statement that “SMR exist because small reactors exist in nuclear vessels” is disingenuous, if not an outright lie. These reactors are small, but are not mass produced in factories and then assembled on site in a paint by numbers way that SMRs are pitched as. They are each bespoke, horrifying expense reactors that are just smaller than standard land based reactors. The designs are not “assembly line” ready at all.
They are designed for a certain size, but also for warfare. They spare literally no expense when making them, and do things that no civilian plant should ever do. The cost per megawatt is astronomical. Just unimaginably expensive, to the point of being instant commercial dead ends. Literally none of their designs would be considered usable, even if they weren’t military secrets.
The truth of the matter is that no one on earth has a working SMR design. The US goverment dumped hundreds of millions of subsidies into them recently and the companies all failed. This 15 billion for 4 plants next to Toronto, a city Doug Ford hates, is likely a mix of vendetta and media blitz for Ontario to deflect from their minimal renewals commitment.

Science Fiction@lemmy.world•Timothy Zahn goes aggressively pro life in the latest Quadrail book.
4·1 year agoSomehow missed him, but I would say John normans "Gor" is another example.
I still cringe when I remember chatting with a used bookstore clerk while checking out and off hand said “with a cover like that, it’s got to be good.” Dude gave me a slight pity smile and sold me the book.
It was not good. The raw shittiness of “dominant man enslaves submissive woman and she likes it” got old real fast.

Science Fiction@lemmy.world•Timothy Zahn goes aggressively pro life in the latest Quadrail book.
13·1 year agoIf an author constantly talked positively about the rape in the book, explained it away, told people why this rape was actually something positive for the victim, on and on, then yeah, you could very succinctly call the author “pro-rape.”
OP listed multiple elements that make it clear Zahn is specifically opposed to abortion and just thinly forcing “pro-life” talking points into the book via largely wooden characters.
When sane and reasonable characters would make different choices but none are possible because of the author refusing to acknowledge them, then yeah, its not hard to pin down his stance on the matter.

12·1 year agoAlmost took a job early in my career that would have led to being an oracle DBA. Have managed to continue not working with Oracle at all the rest.
I may be oracle proof. Maybe I should give these hospitals a ring.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Suggestions for people on Fosstodon considering movingEnglish
11·1 year agoThe link above requires going to a sublink that is long but also very vague to find out the core issue. That link has basically no call outs for a callout post, just byzantine commentary about fosstodons overall code of conduct.
Which fosstodon mod engaged in what racist/anti-lqbt behavior? Where is the admins reply when they were notified about the above behavior?
EDIT: found this post of the mods issues. The feckless Admin response is here.
