Programming@programming.dev•What is your development environment?English
2·3 months ago- OS:
- Arch Linux or OpenBSD, depending in how I feel
- Editor:
- Micro on Linux
- mg(1) on OpenBSD
- Plug-ins:
- Micro has support for a few linters, which is all I really need
- mg(1), meanwhile, doesn’t even have syntax highlighting
- Terminal:
- Kitty on Linux
- XTerm on OpenBSD
- Shell:
- Zsh on Linux
- ksh on OpenBSD
- Version Control:
- Git is the only realistic option (though Mercurial and Fossil are nice)
- Code Hosting:
- Usually Codeberg
- I also have sourcehut
- My Formula Student team uses GitLab
- My university and another society use GitHub 🤮
I usually licence my work under GPL if it’s a large project, or Beerware if it’s something smaller (or if it’s for internal use in one of my societies).
Any coursework I do, however, gets licenced under BSD-3-clause. For this, GPL would be too restrictive and Beerware would be too informal, and BSD-3-clause is a nice middle-ground (as far as I’m concerned).
- OS:

Ah. That’s not an issue for me, per se, but it is wholly unethical. I guess I’ll stop using it then…
I trust Mullvad with my card number a lot more than Amazon, and I did mention that I would have paid with Monero if only I had any.
As for Posteo, great experiences all around. It mostly just gets out of your way and, unlike more popular providers, isn’t always telling you about how great it is. However, the SPAM filter could be better.

SimpleX?
Tox would also be fantastic, but they need to improve their encryption and get it audited. Also, some nicer UIs in the various clients would be nice.
Bitwarden.
If it works, I suppose not.

7·6 months agoNOTE: URLs written in italics are unofficial/self-hosted instances of their respective version control systems.
- Forgejo (https://codeberg.org/) and Gitea (https://tildegit.org/) are great.
- sourcehut (https://sr.ht/) is fantastic, and also offers Mercurial hosting.
- source.community (gemini://source.community) is interesting.
- Fossil (https://code.rosaelefanten.org/) is also interesting, and doesn’t use Git.
- Savannah (https://savannah.nongnu.org/) is the version control system used by the FSF and the GNU project. Uses CVS and Git, with ViewVC and cgit frontends. You must make regular commits, otherwise your account may be pruned.
My firewall varies from installation-to-installation, as it’s always client-side with a custom DNS provider. Right now, I’m using YaST Firewall on my main machine, iptables on my old ThinkPad, and my other machines are currently between operating systems. In the past, I have also dabbled in ufw, pf, and awall.
In addition to that, I generally use NextDNS (though I also get excellent results with Mullvad DNS).
My policy is simple: reject all incoming connections, except for Torrent and Syncthing.

Viewer? Probably just Quick Look. It’s built into the Files app.
If you want to edit, just use Apple Photos. Everything is in there anyway.
