Other way around. Open Library is part of the internet archive. Given it’s also vastly superior in quality and has tools to maintain and administrate the data, I very much prefer it over alternative offerings. If Bookwyrm at least had a curation/maintainence team or support group or something, and not everyone could just nilly-willy add duplicates of existing entries, then I could see more use for it.

But like others have said, it’s also a bit of a different use case. If you want to pull data, definitely do it from OL. They’re the same source Bookwyrm uses for its main data import, after all.

Considering who is behind it, I just use Open Library. In particular because like you say, their actual data is much more useful.

Ah, I might have worded that badly: I meant why they need a social media server? As in, own their own slice of service.

It’s one thing to have your owned channels and then also disseminate via other channels that people already use. But if you want to provide your own service, you also need to run the actual service now, including moderation, administration, everything. It’s not exactly the kind of company I’d connect to having their own federated-social-media-server, basically. I mean there’s no downside to them running one of course, but I see that separate of their day-to-day business of doing news if they got a handful of people who are into the tech and want to keep it on running on top of their main work, basically.

They are supposed to do news, right? We have open standards for that already. RSS feeds, namely.

I think this is based on the way short form video has taken over as being what having-the-TV-on-in-the-background was for the baby boomers. And click-then-go-back is too complex an interaction for “noise” while having your brain off, while swiping from meaningless clip to meaningless clip in shorts or tiktok works.

Over a million actually by now, and they got above 15 mil total.

For me I like them, I just wish:

• The puzzles were tougher.
• The story wasn’t as thin and spread out. It’s fine, but just not a lot of story for the amount of time it has to last.

I will say that as a result, my by-far favorite entry in the series is Layton vs Ace Attorney since it uses the combination of both “gameplay types” to cram more story “meat” into the same length of adventure. It’s also a wee bit darker, which actually helps it a lot IMO.

It just seems to say that you cannot rip this SDK out to use it on something else. Which makes sense as far as an internal library goes, at least on the surface?
