  • Its a true language, you dont hand an illiterate kid shakespear and tell them to have at it, you start them with basic books, even guided readings, and have them read out loud, and then they advance through more complicated books until they get the hang of things and start making their own essays, they continue the process of moving from simpler to more complex books/code-projects until one day the developer becomes minted when they have an idea of their own and they realize they have the vocabulary and strong enough opinions already formed to just make the idea their own - and then the learning is self sustaining.

Dont put the cart before the horse, shovel the shit for a while until you figure out where it lands - theres no workaround to gaining experience - just got to experience it

  • Destroy abstractions

The reality is, if you have an abstraction layer and one implementation of it, you dont need that abstraction layer

People will complain, “oh but think about the refactor if we have to change vendors/etc” but i have yet to ever switch vendors/api/etc and not had to completely rethink the abstraction layer

Just get rid of it, it will be easier, less code, more precise, and in the long run you’ll cargo cult less

Just write the code for the things you have, and if things change, yup then things will change - to anticipate future changes and upfront the work for the unknown only to then have to make more changes once those real changes eventually arrive and dont match your old predictions is just more work and more confusion

  • I think java has enough momentum that it will join in the perpetual pantheon of languages with FORTRAN and C - however with that said, learning Go changed how I write Java for the better, I was able to do this within my java job after convincing the team that a small but neccisarry but not critical side project could be done in Go to test it out - I had a blast learning and writing it, even though ultimately the dynamics of my company kept us in Java

  • Plants respond and react stressfully to being cut and chewed and digested.

To ignore this is just as bad as ignoring the plight of animals.

You don’t have to be thankful for the food that you eat and sacrifice for your life, but I will. If you are vegan then you are already aware of some of this plight of life, especially the cruelty of factory farm animals, but I ask you to expand your mind to the plight of all living things.

I know that when I thank my food, especially fresh plants, that I can feel a warmth of gratefulness radiate from my stomach. I recommend you try it with your next salad and when you are at your garden.

I want my animals, plants, fungi, bacteria, and all life that I interact with to live happy and fulfilling lives.

The ones I eat to continue my happy and fulfilling life I am especially grateful for.

It will be a constant struggle to ensure my food and all life I interact with is happy and fulfilled, and to reflect deeply on what I can change and improve when it is not.

Humans are uniquely capable to manage and ensure quality of life for ecosystems . The water, the soil, the air, the plants, the fungi, the animals. We can choose the well trotted path to exploit, or we can choose the harder path to heal and maintain.

My solution is to operate a homestead where I can ensure the food I eat and use have a quality happy fulfilling life, and a simple swift painless transfer of life to me and those I can provide for.
